About

OUR MISSION

We're here to help students find opportunities to explore the rich multi-faceted world of yoga. There are many places to find yoga classes to practice postures and alignment, but for yoga students wanting to broaden their understanding of yoga's other offerings, there are fewer venues. The Institute for Yogic Studies is presenting high-quality classes and events in meditation, pranayama, philosophy, Sanskrit, kirtan, Ayurveda and yoga teacher training. Check the calendar! Our commitment is to help you have a fuller yogic experience rooted in tradition and guided by experienced professionals.

We have created Yoga Central because we care about you and your experience, and what we propose is...

  • To create a non-competitive external environment and a less judgmental internal environment.
  • To create a safe haven where people can explore spirituality in a nurturing environment.
  • To prepare our hearts and minds for calm abiding and deep thoughts.
  • To offer a yoga transformation and inner peace.
  • We want to offer activities that are stepping stones on the way to higher truth.
  • Yoga Central is Canton’s only registered 300-hour yoga school.

Our studio grew out of a yoga community with a long tradition in Kent, Ohio. With more trained teachers, the community grew. In 2001, teachers and students came together to form the Kent Yoga Center at University Plaza.

We held a vision of being close to the center of town, and in a peaceful, yet energizing, place. After years of seeking, we discovered a serene location next to the Cuyahoga River and put down roots. Here, at the Silk Mill, we are surrounded by gardens, tall trees, flowing water and occasional train whistles. Downtown Kent is just across the Main Street Bridge.

We maintain a schedule of unique year-round drop-in classes that attract a mix of new and long-time students, and we offer a range of topical workshops and special classes taught by experienced staff and guest teachers. At Kent Yoga we learn and grow together.

The Yoga Place was opened by Mike Curtis in 1995, before there were yoga mats or yoga clothing. Mike began doing yoga in 1984 and immediately made it a daily practice. The Yoga Place opened for service, for community outreach, and as a holistic learning center. Mike Curtis was one of Ohio's first 500-hour yoga teachers and The Yoga Place is Canton's first registered yoga school. The Yoga Place emphasizes awareness-based practices that bring kindness, compassion, and nurturing attention into our daily lives. Our programs and workshops include philosophy, yoga teacher training, book study groups, music concerts, art openings, Sanskrit and more. We also offer massage, Tai Chi, personal training, yoga therapy, Belly Dancing, Reiki and counseling. We are excited about learning because by learning you can make wiser choices in your life; choices that benefit you, the people around you and the world in which we live.

Lifesource Yoga is Akron's most diversified community yoga studio. To us, yoga is more than an exercise-it is a way of life. By using the breath to initiate and accompany traditional yoga postures (asanas), you, the student, can fin a path to inner peace and spiritual wellness. With regular practice, you can expect increased strength, flexibility, toning, and lengthening of muscles, and imporved physical fitness. The most beneficial aspect of yoga may be the mental and emotional calm and clarity you will achieve as a result of your practice.
